What do I need to know to have a dedicated server

Last Updated: November 30, -0001

Renting or Co-Locating a dedicated server that is not managed takes a lot of time and knowledge. You must be familiar with the operating system your dedicated server will be running on, and by familiar I mean you must know the ins and outs of it completely.

The server administrator must not only understand the operating system of his dedicated server they must also understand the hardware, and how to fix conflicts. Once conflicts are out of the question software patches, operating system upgrades, and security modifications will need to be done almost on a regular basis.

Now the above takes a LOT of time, and if you simply don't have the time or don't wish to learn how to admin your own server you can go with a managed solution.

A managed dedicated server is where you have full control over the server but someone else is in charge of configuring, fixing, and overall upkeep of the server. This solution is more costly but can prove a life saver for those who need it.
